The topic of borders has many dimensions: political, social and spatial. Growing up between Switzerland and Germany, I long experienced borders as open. It was only when the borders between Konstanz and Kreuzlingen were closed due to COVID-19 that I realised their impact and saw how differently borders can be experienced. This personal experience forms the basis of my master’s thesis. The focus is on the urban planning and architectural examination of the national border between Konstanz(DE) and Kreuzlingen(CH). The aim is to develop a cross-border urban space that connects and at the same time opens up new perspectives for dealing with spatial and social boundaries. The project examines how planning and design can contribute to openness and encounter.

Borders have political, social, and spatial dimensions. Growing up between Switzerland and Germany, I experienced borders as largely open. This changed during the COVID-19 border closures between Konstanz and Kreuzlingen, which revealed how strongly borders shape everyday life and how differently they can be perceived. This experience forms the foundation of my master’s thesis. The project focuses on the urban and architectural investigation of the national border between Konstanz (DE) and Kreuzlingen (CH). It aims to develop a cross-border urban space that connects both cities and opens new perspectives on dealing with spatial and social boundaries through planning and design.

The border as an urban seam is one of six studied areas and holds strong historical and urban significance. Currently, the former customs building contains largely unused ground floors and underused public space. My vision, a meeting place on the border, transforms it through temporary activations and later mixed uses.
