The State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim plans an extension in the city center. For this purpose, a new building is to be constructed on the N7 square. In addition to publicly accessible concert and dance halls, the new location will provide rehearsal spaces for musicians and students of the performing arts. The project aims to create a new campus connected to the existing university buildings, establishing a central hub for Mannheim’s music institutions.
To complete the N7 site, a corner facing the Lauer’sche Gärten is required, which determined the placement of the building volume. Public functions such as the chamber music hall and cafeteria are located on the ground floor, while music and ballet spaces occupy the first to seventh floors. A café on the second floor opens onto a roof terrace, which connects via a large staircase to the campus courtyard and links to the university grounds. The terrace also serves as a social meeting point. Circulation cores spiral around a central void and lead into an open library. Structurally, the upper floors are supported by arcades and a coffered ceiling system.
